Rite de d’Entree2’40 + 4’20 / Soundtracks + Photography / United Kingdom / 2023

Drawing on Marie-Louise von Franz’s interpretation of fairy tales, Jungians see these narratives as reflections of the Self, where characters embody archetypes representing different facets of the unconscious. Von Franz introduced the concept of “rites d’entrée” (entry points) in Analytical Psychology, particularly in her work Interpretation of Fairy Tales, to describe the entry into unconscious realms.

Exploring this concept through two soundtracks: Rabbit’s Dream represents standing at the threshold of your unconscious, you prepare to enter the unknown. In creating this piece, I also drew inspiration from the timeless prose of Clarice Lispector’s Água Viva, which captures the fluid, sonic landscape of the unconscious.

When butterflies arrive at a valley but suddenly disappear, Why?

Because they are in a rabbit's dream.

                                                                      MUST I enter ? Shall I stay?
Void (Escape to Pink Planet) represent the state that although one recognize that it holds challenges, one understand that this journey is essential for one’s personal growth and continued discovery of the Self.

I developed a method that translates the interaction between Stimuli and Emotion into music creation, using spoken words, audio effects, and rhythms. By intentionally leaving significant space in the composition, I evoke a hollow and empty sensation.
This approach is informed by theoretical explorations in Zen Buddhism, particularly The Practice of Not Thinking by Ryunosuke Koike, and Lacan’s Concept of Emptiness. I aim to understand and convey the fear that arises when confronting the void or the authentic Self through sound.

Balancing excitement with the inherent nervousness, it’s important to remain calm and open, allowing yourself to savor the calm before the storm. This day also holds a spiritual quality, as you stand poised to recognize and interpret the signs from the universe.

The drawing (Figure Above) illustrates how, in today’s world, we often use technology to create stimuli that distract us from confronting the Self, yet paradoxically, we also blame technology. The question then becomes: how can we harness technology to uncover unfamiliar layers of the Self?
